Some Coffee Inquiries

In honor of National Coffee Day, I thought I would take a minute to field some coffee-related questions. These are the questions I know you want to ask but you were too afraid to...

Eric, why do you like coffee so much?
Here's the truth: I have a caffeine addiction. The first step is admitting you have a problem but the problem with that is I don't know what the second step is and I really don't care. I enjoy a good caffeine buzz and the creativity that usually comes with it. Could I be creative without coffee? Of course. But why not have both creativity and caffeine? Also, it tends to increase my Word With Friends score by a significant margin. It's like legal doping for Scrabble.

Isn't there a line between enjoyment and obsession?
Yeah, what's your point?

Aren't you afraid it will stunt your growth?
Sure, although I'm pretty sure that only applies to kids and teenagers and is probably just an Old Wives' Tale designed to keep all the coffee for the grown-ups. And even if it does have some stunting effect, I'm not too worried. After all, with my Mexican heritage it's not like I was shooting for the stars before.

Why are you always at a café? Why not just brew coffee at home?
Believe me, I see the logic in home-brewed coffee. You could save both time and money by making a pot of coffee in your own kitchen. And it's not like I haven't tried. It was, however, a failed experiment. I would always brew way more than I needed and then would feel bad for letting it go to waste so I would end up downing as much as I could before work and still take another cup to-go. I actually ended up drinking even more coffee than I do now. And it was such a hassle to get up every morning and remember to turn on the coffeemaker before I got in the shower and then prepare it with cream and sugar and still have to clean it all up before I left the house. In the end, I just found it much easier to get my coffee served up in a café. Plus, they have free Wi-Fi whereas my house has none. And friendly baristas. And they have that coffeehouse vibe that helps me focus on the task at hand, whether it's blogging, writing or whooping tail on Words With Friends.

So, any other coffee-related questions?

I'm going to insist you make your Words with Friends move BEFORE ordering your drink from now on! I do not enjoy the tail whooping.
