Around Town - Open Mic Poetry Night at Bookworks

This past Tuesday, Bookworks hosted an open mic poetry night. Despite having visited the neighboring Flying Star Cafe numerous times, I've never actually been inside Bookworks -- which is a crime I'm glad I had a chance to remedy this week.

Bookworks is a fantastic local bookstore -- a fading breed these days. Any book lover would be delighted with their selection and their staff was more than willing to help me track down a title I was searching for.

As for the poetry, I tend to lower expectations before attending any open mic events. Thankfully, the poets that night were outright stellar. A number of them had published work and they presented with great enthusiasm.

One outstanding poet was Joe Brundidge. Under the guise of Element615, Joe has been traveling around the United States, sharing his poetry and his life story.

His poetry really spoke to me, especially his piece titled "Stronger Things." I think you'll enjoy it, too. Have a listen...

Bookworks plans on hosting poetry events once a month so I hope to see you at the next one. Connect with them on Facebook so you'll have a heads up on all the details.

And you can find Element615 on Facebook, too...
