California - Get Lost, Part 1

During this most recent trip to California, I tried a slightly new approach to exploring the local scene.

I didn't plan ahead.

Except for one particular coffee shop, I had no solid idea as to where I might go. So most of the time I took to my trusty phone apps or I just hit the streets. And in doing so I found a lot of really cool, local places. Lots of places. Like a taco stand in SoCal and a gay-friendly neighborhood in San Diego. It's all in another day of exploring the local.

Pedro's Tacos

I don't even remember how we ended up here except that it was conveniently located just off the freeway as we drove from San Diego up to Anaheim. The promise of the "World's Best Tacos" lured me in. Hyperbole aside, I'm glad to say it didn't disappoint. The best part of the meal was sitting out under the California sun, munching on a fish taco and knowing just how close to the coast you were.

Crest Cafe

This was before Pedro's, when we were staying the night in San Diego. I decided to trust my Foursquare app to find me someplace open late to eat. It lead me right to Crest Cafe. What it forgot to tell me was that it was located in Hillcrest, which happens to be a gay-friendly district in San Diego. No big deal, I just wasn't expecting to pass by nightclubs with large rainbow flags overhead and drag queens taking a smoke break out front. But that's just part of the fun of getting a little bit lost in a new city. The slab of fried mozzarella and chocolate chip pie made it all well worth the venture.

Stay tuned for a follow-up where I managed to get lost in a Korean district and found some treasures in the Arizonan desert.
