To be honest with you guys, as of a few short weeks ago, I didn't know the first thing about zines. Then I showed up one evening to a Spelling Bee at Winnings Coffee, ended up participating and winning, and was introduced to Marya, a leading purveyor of the local zine scene. She invited me to come down to The Kosmos for their big event. That's how I ended up at the 2nd Annual ABQ Zine Fest.
It was with a little trepidation that I showed up, not at all sure what to expect. As it turned out, I loved it. In fact, I was sad that I had to leave early. The people I met were authentic through and through and it was obvious that they were all engaged in something they loved. A major part of zines is self-expression. And these people aren't afraid to share who they are with other people.
Take Billy, for example. He works at a casino of all places. And I'm pretty sure they wouldn't approve of bunny ears near the Blackjack tables. But at The Kosmos, among other zinesters, he's free to be himself, rabbit ears and all.
Anyway, I managed to capture some pictures and video in the short time before I had to leave. I especially enjoyed watching the Speed Stapling Competition. I hope you do, too.
Here you go.
Here's video from the Speed Stapling...
