Today was Small Business Saturday, a marketing strategy designed to encourage people to shop at small, local businesses the day after Black Friday.
Truth be told, I don't need a marketing plan to get me to visit a small business. I make the effort to shop local every chance I get. But it is nice to have a day set aside when everyone has it on their mind to choose local business over chain stores.
In fact, I overheard a number of shoppers today talking about Small Business Saturday while I was out and about so I guess the strategy is working.
I visited about a dozen stores, working my way through EDo (East Downtown), Nob Hill, and finally ending in the North Valley. It made for a long day of shopping but I found some great gifts and discovered a few new shops I had never visited. It helps to get out on foot if you really want to explore a particular area.
I'm going to save my thoughts on each shop for the coming weeks. I've been working on a top secret project with The Idea State to build on the shop local theme through the holidays. So be on the lookout. In the meantime, shop local!
